‘Experiments for schools inspired by Darwin’

“I’m a Worm, Get Me Out of Here uses different-coloured baits (worms) that are selected and eaten by birds” gaat over natuurlijke selectie.

Learning outcomes: Students will gain a better understanding of the principle of natural selection and its power to produce directional change in only a few generations.

They will also gain experience of planning investigations, and collecting and analysing data.

Voor 14-16 jaar

“The Brine Date” gaat over seksuele selectie. “In Brine Date, they’ll study brine shrimps in more detail, looking at their mating habits.”

Learning outcomes: Students will need to plan their investigation and think carefully about experimental design. They will practise fine manipulative skills, measure accurately, record measurements, process the data and interpret the results. They will need to act responsibly while handling living organisms.

While carrying this out students will gain some scientific understanding of Darwin’s ideas. They will realise that natural selection occurs as brine shrimps compete for food, and also that sexual selection operates as males are competing for larger females that produce more offspring.

Voor 16-19 jaar

“In The X-Bacteria practical protocol, students will investigate the way in which bacteria can acquire antibiotic resistance.”

Learning outcomes: Students will learn practical skills required for culturing micro-organisms, practice aseptic techniques and consider experimental design.

They will learn about one of the important mechanisms by which antibiotic resistance spreads between bacteria, which should help them to understand the process of evolution.

Teachers may use this practical to lead into discussions around contemporary issues in biomedicine and genetics such as the prevalence of antibiotic resistance.
